Reliance-Vodafone may follow suit...

As a result of this deal, Idea is hoping to leverage new opportunities that would emerge from the convergence of voice, data, video and wireless technologies. The move would also help Idea to effectively manage its customers and even enable generation of higher revenues through newer routes. Back in 2004, Airtel, the largest telephone operator of India, had sensed the need to outsource management of its core IT infrastructure and had sealed the $750 million deal with IBM for a period of ten years.

For now, the jury is still out for both Reliance and Vodafone, but talks are on in full swing. Moreover, since Vodafone globally has outsourced its business to IBM, it may be keen to seek the good offices of the IT major in India as well. According to the grapevine, IBM is virtually poised in bagging a contract valued at circa $1.6 billion with Vodafone.
