Ever since Hu Jintao took over from Ziang Zemin, there have been a series of systematic clampdowns on those trying to counter the state’s propaganda machinery. Earlier this April, Shi Tao, a journalist was sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment for allegedly revealing state secrets. He had revealed of an official diktat that banned Chinese press from reporting on commemorations of the infamous Tiananmen Square massacre. Interestingly, he was caught, after the local police was provided tip by US web giant Yahoo!
