Jayashree Raghuram (Head, India Office – Leeds Metropolitan University, UK)

Q. What do foreign universities have to offer to Indian students?
A. The following can summarise what foreign universities have to offer to Indian students:
• High quality education.
• Courses notavailable in India.
• A multicultural learning environment.
• Internationally recognised degree for those aspiring for a career abroad.
• Global curriculum easily transferable across the world, which is highly desirable by employers.

A degree is not just about looking good on paper, but it is also about having practical knowledge and professional skills that can be valuable to the employers.

Q. How difficult or easy is it for students to get a decent job after a degree from abroad?
A. Going by the records we have of our Indian alumni from Leeds Metropolitan University, I can confirm that students have been hired by some of the best names in the industry in various sectors across the world. I believe that when a student has completed a degree at a good education institute such as Leeds Metropolitan University, the outcome achieved is not only from the classroom experience but also from the ‘out-of-classroom’ experience which makes them a very saleable product in the job market. Our curriculum also works to develop entrepreneurship, which has also been of valuable assistance to Indian students.

Q. Universities abroad put more emphasis on experience than education. In India, it is the other way round. Does it have to do anything with the culture and way of life?
A. Universities abroad are a rather broad term to use, as every country and institute have their own focus. For example, the hospitality courses offered in Switzerland are very practice oriented, while a UK university will probably have a theory and practice mix, depending on what the desired learning outcome of that particular course is. A chef’s course will be more practical and a manager’s course will be more academic oriented. I think it will be fair to say that UK universities have an equal emphasis on practical as well as academic development of a student. Practical knowledge needs to have the academic underpinning to the learning. Click here to read more...
