Best foot forward

On June 25 this year, Union HRD Minister Kapil Sibal set into motion a unique teacher-training programme to be conducted by IIT Bombay under ‘Talk to a Teacher’ project of the National Mission on Education. It is a first-of-its-kind initiative where 10,000 engineering college teachers will be trained simultaneously with the help of broadband network and ICT tools.

Such programmes are increasingly becoming a hit in India, with the government and private players investing heavily to increase the academia efficiency. The initiative by IIT Bombay, albeit the biggest, is not the only case.

In Kerala, the State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has developed a programme to improve the management capacity of teachers and to enhance the quality of teaching-learning process in government and private schools. SRM University in Chennai has offered to fund short-term training programmes for teachers of technical education across the country.

Maharastra government has signed an MoU with the British Council to train 17,000 English teachers, who will then travel across the state to train those in primary schools. Assam government has joined hands with Microsoft Corporation India to accelerate information communication technology adoption in schools, to improve the skill sets of teachers.
