For effective learning, teachers should be trained to work with their students’ varied interests.

Q. How well are nations doing in improving teaching efficiency?
A. Finland and Singapore have done a great job and are known for effective teaching. These nations practice equity – they try to share equal resources with everyone. For example, Finland has a strong policy of equal resources for all schools and they work hard to avoid discrimination based on background.

These countries understand that if their students get poor resources, they will learn less effectively, which will impact the nation’s growth. Reports from the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) indicate that countries that have equal distribution of resources across schools have better outcomes.

Q. What motivates one to become a teacher?
A. There are different reasons why one takes up this profession. There are people who enjoy teaching and are quite good at it. Some teachers are effective with a lot of students, while some are more effective with only a specific type of student.

Q. Do you consider teaching as an art or a science?
A. It is both. Teaching is an art because each teacher has his or her own strength and own way to be effective. Teachers need to use their skills by adapting their practices to what is effective and what is not with different kinds of students.

Q. What are your thoughts on the effectiveness of teaching and training programmes in the United States?
A. We need to evaluate the effectiveness of our educational practices, otherwise we will miss an incredible opportunity. An educational programme for children, Sesame Street (started in the United States in 1969), has become popular around the world. It has based its assessments and educational effectiveness on research since the time it started. Every programme has been assessed to see what works with children and what does not. Hence, all its programmes have been successful. It is not a very difficult research. It simply looks for evidence about whether a student pays attention, does he or she actually learn something of all the things that are taught. Sesame Street is an economical initiative to see what is effective and what is not. When we do such assessments we can produce successful educational programmes. Click here to read more...
