Beyond cigars

For all those who have made it a point that all the news about the progress of the third world has to necessarily start and end with the comparative analysis of the GDP and its growth rates of India and China, here is an anecdote. An otherwise obscure (well according to mainstream media) and tagged ‘destined to be doomed’ Cuba has been ranked 50th in the UNDP HDR Index of 2006, in a list in which India have been ranked 126th (thanks to its dismal quality of healthcare and education) and China ranked 81st.

With proper succession planning and a clear roadmap, the O. P. Jindal group is marching on confi dently

After starting its venture with a single steel plant at Hissar in Haryana in 1970, the O. P. Jindal group has grown manifolds. Though the group is continuously spreading itself, the mentor of the group, O. P. Jindal, remained strictly focused on a single vertical – steel. The performance of various group companies has been terrific over the past few years. While the turnover of Jindal Saw has grown almost three times to Rs.23 billion in FY 2006 from Rs.8 billion in FY 2004, Jindal Steel & Power has almost doubled to Rs.28.7 billion in FY 2006 from Rs.15.5 billion in FY 2004.

America leads the way

America leads the way. If these marketing gimmicks have worked in America, they would so in the rest of the world too. The fastest learner has been Venezuela’s Hugo Chavez, who has given his people free riders on a new metro line, free tickets to a rock concert, and even an unexpectedly large bonus – worth three times the monthly salary – just before the re-elections. His opponent, Manuel Rosales, in retaliation gave away free debit cards to more than two million poor Venezuelan households, allowing them to withdraw around 250 pounds a month. Freebies have some kind of a magical pull. The exiled child king of Bulgaria, Simeon Saxe-Coburg, used lottery power to win the elections. The lucky ones won cars, holiday packages and televisions. Not just this, he even had an exciting slogan.

Hero Group

Boasting of one of the highest labour productivity rates across the globe, Hero Cycles Division is also the first to introduce the concept of ‘just-in-time inventory’ and is credited to be the only Indian company to have mastered the art of this Japanese ‘just-in-time inventory’ style of production.

In 1975, ‘Hero Cycles Limited’ emerged as the largest manufacturer of bicycles in India and 1984 witnessed Hero Honda Motors Limited’s sortie in joint venture with Honda Motors of Japan, to manufacture motorcycles. Soon in 1985, the 100cc Hero Honda Motorcycle entered the Indian market and by 1988 it was declared the No.1 Indian motorcycle. In 1986, ‘Hero Cycles Ltd.’ reached a landmark by earning a place in the Guinness Book of Records as the largest bicycle manufacturer in the world.

A forgotten land once shrouded by the Iron Curtain

The (former) Prussian city of Kaliningrad (then known as Koenigsberg) has a lot to offer the intrepid traveler willing to go off the beaten track. Busts of Marx still look down upon those that care to sashay past, and that isn’t entirely bizarre since this foreign exclave is one of the western most territories of Russia, located smack between Poland and Lithuania. There was a time when no foreigners were allowed here, closed as it was for all purposes to the outside world. The collapse of the Soviet Union changed all of that, and a smidgen of patience does wonders to get into the skin of this living lesson in history, a forgotten land once shrouded by the Iron Curtain.
