Samsung sang its way into India’s hearts through durable white goods that soon became a household name in the true sense of the word

Despite boasting a good product portfolio, its communication has failed to create the recall that a Nokia (or now a Motorola) creates. While Motorola seems to be rocking with Abhishek Bachchan on its side and its hit RAZR phones, and Nokia with its eye-catching commercials and the N series, Samsung has lost the magical charm which worked wonders for its durables range.

Analysts feel that Samsung is concentrating only on the volume driven low end segment. But Samir promises that the company would soon be coming out with handsets that are for the hi-end consumers. On offer will be sets that ooze a hiend quotient, redefine style and have more substance.

Will marketers at Samsung be able to recreate the durables success in mobiles or bow out of this race? We’ll keep you posted.

Reliance-Vodafone may follow suit...

As a result of this deal, Idea is hoping to leverage new opportunities that would emerge from the convergence of voice, data, video and wireless technologies. The move would also help Idea to effectively manage its customers and even enable generation of higher revenues through newer routes. Back in 2004, Airtel, the largest telephone operator of India, had sensed the need to outsource management of its core IT infrastructure and had sealed the $750 million deal with IBM for a period of ten years.

For now, the jury is still out for both Reliance and Vodafone, but talks are on in full swing. Moreover, since Vodafone globally has outsourced its business to IBM, it may be keen to seek the good offices of the IT major in India as well. According to the grapevine, IBM is virtually poised in bagging a contract valued at circa $1.6 billion with Vodafone.

Don’t pay for your calls...

Telecom companies, marketers, content providers and aggregators alike have realized this and are trying to reach out to conquer this relatively new terrain, but the road is tough. Anupam Mittal, CMD of People Group – Mauj Telecom, observes that as his company reaches the next level, “operational excellence, disruptive innovation and an unflinching focus on discovering customer needs is what we (Mauj Telecom) will need to distinguish ourselves.”

Entertainment hogs the limelight in the VAS space with P2P applications & ringtones attracting 75% of revenues. There are new, promising areas like mCommerce, which are yet to gain momentum. The low level of awareness, coupled with apprehensions of conducting transactions on mobile are the key reasons for the sluggish growth. The other prominent challenge that faces the industry at the moment is the revenue sharing mechanism in the industry between aggregator, copyright owner & operator. In fact, the discrepancy in revenue sharing is deterring lots of VCs from investing. With operators retaining the biggest chunk of revenues, the proposition of investing in content companies from the point of view of investors, becomes less & less lucrative.

Alan Johnston!

As Alan Johnston’s four weeks in captivity in Gaza strip failed to show any trace of him, the question related to safety of journalists in troubled spots of the world has resurfaced. Johnston represented BBC in Palestine and his kidnapping on March 12, 2007, has been one among the series of crimes in the region, where the journalists have been at the receiving end of cruelty. Without doubt, West Asia has witnessed crimes against journalists more oft en. Ironically, it has not been the notorious third world dictatorship or the Islamic militias that have caused most of these crimes against journalists, but, in fact, countries from the so-called liberal Western world. And how’s that?

Of high interest is the stunning accusation by the most respected Paris-based organisation, ‘Reporters Without Borders’, that accused United States of perpetrating war crimes in Iraq by deliberately targetting journalists that are not in their good books. In the process, the organization contends, investigations must be carried out to determine whether or not Americans are violating the international humanitarian law, and especially the Geneva Convention. If that accusation sounded shocking, the US government’s cup of shame ran over when the International Federation of Journalists seconded the above opinion calling for an independent enquiry against the concerted American attack on the Al-Jazeera and Abu-Dhabi Television channels.
